BACKPACKING SOUTH AFRICA (BSA) was formed in 1998 as a trust organisation for the purpose of cooperatively marketing South Africa as the best international backpacking and adventure destination. In 2007, BSA recognised the need to incorporate address other aspects of youth tourism. BSA expanded and the South African Youth Travel Confederation (SAYTC) was formed. SAYTC is a non-profit, membership-driven organization with the following objectives:

  • to market South Africa globally as a preferred youth tourism destination.
  • to establish a professional youth tourism industry based upon accreditation and guidelines.

SAYTC represents operators like you and addresses the concerns and interests of all operators throughout South Africa. Members are represented  by the following sectors:

  • Backpacking South Africa
  • Education South Africa
  • Tours & transport South Africa
  • Volunteering South Africa

Membership is not limited to South Africa, but includes members from neighbouring Southern African countries: Lesotho, Namibia and Zambia. Most youth tourism service operators in the region are independent, but recognise the need for a national body, that is looking after the needs of visitors to South Africa. All members have undertaken to abide by basic standards and work towards the common good of both the traveller and industry.

The farm Vredenheim was given to Hendrik Elbertz by Simon Van der Stel, who was the governor of the Cape at the time. It then went through a series of owners until it was purchased by the Roux family in 1772. The farm remained in the Roux family for 170 years. The new owners have reintroduced game to the farm. New arrivals to the farm are lions, which you will be cycling past during the tour. For more information go to

Van Ryn’s was established in 1845 by Jan Van Ryn. The Stellenbosch distillery was built in 1905 using stone from the Eerste River. This building is still in use today. Brandy is made from Chenin Blanc and colonbar grapes. These are then crushed and allowed to ferment in to a crisp wine. This wine is then pot-stilled twice and then allowed to age in French oak barrels holding 340litres. Each barrel is hand made by the coopers on site. Every year 3% of the liquid is lost due to evaporation; this is known as “Angel’s Share”. For more information go to

The farm derives its charming name from the legendary colony of water tortoises that was found on the land in the 1800’s. Skilpadvlei has been in the hands of the Joubert family since 1917.  Today, fourth generation Willie Joubert upholds the proud family tradition of harnessing the rich potential of the land with a dedicated commitment to quality. Skilpadvlei is a fully operational farm, with 60 of the 78ha under vineyards and also includes six self catering guest cottages, wedding and conference facilities as well as a restaurant and wine tasting area. Bikes ‘n Wines gives back to community by partnering with Greenpop. For every 10 guests on our tours, we donate 1 tree for greenpop to plant Greenpop is a social enterprise that plants trees and facilitates environmental education and upliftment in under-greened areas. In the last year, we have planted over 7000 trees at more than 100 beneficiary schools, orphanages, community centres and old age homes around Cape Town and a good percentage of these trees are watered and cared for by children. Greenpop plants indigenous and fruit trees, raising money for these trees from the public and corporates. Our vision: The Treevolution! We see a bright green future for Cape Town and South Africa – a future where the now barren, under-greened suburbs are not that different from the ‘leafy’ suburbs, a future in which all children know the value of protecting out planet and sharing in its gifts, a cleaner, greener future for all. Join the Treevolution – everyone’s invited! Find out more

Bikes ‘n Wines is proudly partnered with Giant Bicycles. We rely on giant for all our bicycles, parts and maintenance. Giant was founded in 1972 with a mission: to create better bikes and improve the cycling experience. From the very start, innovation and manufacturing expertise set us apart. It began with our lightweight chromoly frames. Giant’s ability to produce high- quality bikes at an affordable price allowed more riders to experience cycling in a whole new way. Since then, Giant has pioneered advancements in both aluminum and composite engineering. We introduced the first affordable carbon fiber bike, the Cadex 980 C, and revolutionized high-performance road bikes with our Compact Road Design. In mountain biking, Giant’s Maestro Suspension established a new level of performance for off-road riding and racing. Over the last four decades, Giant has grown well beyond its manufacturing roots to become the world’s leading brand of quality bicycles and gear. With more than 12,000 retail partners worldwide, we aim to inspire adventure in all riders, from casual to competitive. Giant bikes win world championships. They win design awards, too. But most importantly, they win the hearts of riders who choose to make cycling a part of their lives. We support that choice. We think it makes the world a better place. Giant aims to be a trusted friend on every road, path and trail that unfolds before you. We’re proud to be part of your cycling adventures. RIDE LIFE. RIDE GIANT Find out more
